Canon VIXIA HF100 High Definition Camcorder
Reviewed By Our Editors
Following the tradition of releasing products that surpass quality standards and technology innovation, Canon has developed the Canon VIXIA HF100 high definition camcorder. It is designed with a 12x optical zoom so that the videos are magnified but not blurred and pixelated. It provides Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) format recording with the ease and numerous benefits of flash memory. It works superbly with other mobile gadgets such as notebook PCs, MP3 players, PDAs and mobile phones. In addition, Canon has incorporated Canon exclusive features such as 3.3-megapixel full HD 1/3.2-inch CMOS sensor and advanced DIGIC DV II image processor, superRange optical image stabilization, and instant auto focus. With a CMOS sensor, any device will have high noise immunity and low static power consumption. The DIGIC DV II image processor, on the other hand, was developed by Canon to bring optimal image quality for still images, even though video and still images have different color requirements. These features are included in this compact camcorder to bring the videographer in every user and help them capture life as it happens. The recordings may be saved in MPEG-4 and AVCHD (HD) formats, while audio are in 2-channel Dolby Digital .
The camcorder also features a 2.7-inch Widescreen multi-angle vivid LCD and a Canon 12x HD video zoom lens so users documenting an even from a good distance will still get great recording.
For first-time users, their first movie doesn't have to be a poorly-shot recording. With 24p Cinema Mode the camcorder enables the users to achieve a professional 'film-look' and change the frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. The VIXIA HF10's cinema setting changes the color and tone of the recording.
Images and videos are captured in 1920x1080 pixels and are stored in the camcorder's SecureDigital or SDHC memory card. To save memory and be able to record more videos, the VIXIA HF100 may compress the files in DPOF and DCF Exif 2.2 formats.
Aside from all these high-tech features, the camcorder is supported by a slew of features to help produce breathtaking video. These features include f/18 to f/3.0 aperture, white balance, 30p progressive mode and a Pixela ImageMixer software. This software allows you to organize, enhance, and share your videos, as well as transfer your videos to any computer and burn a standard definition DVD. It comes with a catalog system that maintains an indexed and catalogued file.
The VIXIA HF100 connects to a device via a USB mini-B port. It is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and comes with a battery charger.
Canon Vixia HF-100 produce .m2ts files. I am editing these m2ts files with Pinnacle Ultimate Studio 11. Not easy to edit straight from m2ts but is working. A work around: encode the m2ts files to mpeg-2 HD720p and edit the mpegs. This way works very easy in Pinnacle Studio 11.
My PC: AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4400+, RAM 2GB, Video card: XFX Nvidia 9800 GT 512 MB.

Adonian is correct, Bob is wrong. Maybe stop using bargin bin one the chaep software there Bob...Yes, the Canon writes to the card in .mts. Just like the Panasonic SD1/5/9 does and it is recognized by Nero 8, Pinnacle Studio 10/11 and Ulead Visual Studio 10/11. How do I know? I have all 3. For quick edits and renders I use Nero Vision, of all 3 it is the fastest to convert to SD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It also has amazing quality. If you are using Sony Vegas you should have bought a Sony but since you didn't all you have to do is import the .mts in using Vegas pro and it will automatically convert the files to .m2ts. I verified this by downloading the trial and checking it out. Overall, this camera rocks and I am thinking about purchasing another one.

There are 7 programs which directly edit AVCHD format:
Corel Video Studio X2 Pro
Nero Vision (part of Nero 8 or Nero 9)
Ulead MovieFactory 6 Plus
Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c
ArcSoft Total Media Extreme
Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12
Cyberlink Power Director 7 Plus
TMPG Express 4.0
You need a fast dual core or quad core CPU to handle AVCHD smoothly.

Dont believe other reviewers saying that there is no software to edit the 'mts' files that this camcorder outputs. I use Ulead Video Studio 11+ and it WORKS PERFECTLY. My MacBook automatically recognizes the avchd card as an actual camcorder and imports the files with NO PROBLEMS.
AVCHD MTS files ARE editable. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TELL POTENTIAL BUYERS NOT TO PURCHASE.
As for the camera, I really like the 24p mode, my kids want to make their own action movies and 24p looks almost real.

Beware. This camera writes out ''.mts'' files only, for editing and video formation use on a PC. None of the major edit programs recognize these ''.mts'' files (even though some say they do, such as Sony Vegas Pro 8b) but rather recogize Sony's AVCHD ''.m2ts'' files. And renaming doesn't work. They are not the same format. Then the bundled Pixela Imagemixer 3 only exports to one format, a low resolution mpeg-2 file. After 4 days, and 10 phone calls to various tech support people including Canon, no one can offer a solution at this time. There is a program called VoltaicHD Converter 2.0 for $30 that MAY help to solve this problem. Virually all tech support people say, ''maybe we will upgrade to support ''.mts'' in the future.
MEGAPIXELS AND PHOTO PRINT SIZE
The
photo print quality of your images depends on the camera's "megapixel
rating." The higher number of pixels your camera has, the higher the resolution
(or sharpness) of your images---and the larger your prints can be without
quality loss.
Digital Camera Flash Storage
Capacities
* Average file size
using cameras highest resolution JPEG mode. Actual number of
photos, songs, and minutes will vary depending on camera/device model,
format resolution and compression, usable capacity, and bundled software.
Actual usable memory capacity may vary. 1MB equals 1 million bytes; 1GB
equals 1 billion bytes.
NUMBER OF IMAGES STORED ON A DIGITAL CARD The number of
pictures you can take varies depending on your camera model and complexity
of the scene being photographed. To calculate how many pictures your card
can hold, divide the capacity of your card by the average file size of your
images. For example, if you have a 256MB card, and use a camera that has an
average file size of 1.2MB, then 256 divided by 1.2 gives you approximately
213 pictures. As you change modes on your camera, the number of images will
increase if you shoot in a lower resolution mode, and decrease if you shoot
in a higher resolution mode.
